Tamariki benefit from shade

BENEFITS FROM FUNDING INJECTION

Tamariki benefit from shade

A beautiful blue sunshade covering the sandpit is a welcome addition for Newlands Childcare.

The childcare centre is a community, not-for-profit, full day, education and care centre. It is governed by a committee of parents, who are always ambitious to provide a quality early learning experience for their children.

Former Chair of Newlands Childcare, Simon Heddle-Baker, says they received a $1,000 grant from Hutt Mana Charitable Trust in 2018 for the sunshade as a valuable addition to the new outdoor area.

“This has been invaluable over the summer, enabling our tamariki to work in the sandpit safely on sunny days. Being able to access grants, such as this, gives us the ability to provide extra resources for our tamariki that we would otherwise have to fund through extra fundraising.”

Simon says it’s easy to apply for funding and that they can apply for grants year after year, as the need arises, “it’s not a one-off opportunity. This really ensures that we apply long term planning, so we know exactly what we want to continue to improve the environment for all who use the centre.”

In the past the centre has received a grant for an industrial dishwasher and for other play equipment. “It’s all these things that make the experience of the tamariki more rewarding,” says Simon.

All grants recipients are invited to a networking function where the funds are distributed.

“We like the networking opportunities of the distribution functions, it’s a way to bring community groups together, and to swap stories.”
