BENEFITS FROM FUNDING INJECTION

Whitby Bowling Club shows heart

The Whitby Bowling Club was recently granted funding that benefits its wider community.

Club President, Mark O’Connor says they wanted to install an AED defibrillator, so this vital piece of medical equipment is available to anyone requiring it 24/7.

The Hutt Mana Charitable Trust provided $3,000 and the two Probus clubs, that regularly use the club facilities, chipped in the extra funds so the defibrillator could be mounted outside. It’s now located in pride of place outside the club house.

Mark says the Whitby Bowling Club has been around since 1975 when Whitby was developed as suburb of Porirua.

“We have more than 100 members, both social and full playing, but more than that we’re a hub for the whole community. There’s a number of organisations that use the facilities which include a large lounge area suitable for meetings, a bar and kitchen. The club is also a popular for parties.”

“There are three defibrillators in Whitby, one at New World, one at another sports club, and our one, it just provides better coverage for the community and is a real asset.”

This is the second time the club has received a grant from HMCT, the first one was used for a dishwasher.

“It’s really important for all sporting and not-for-profit organisations to be able to apply for grants like these. Clubs wouldn’t survive without this sort of support.  It’s great there’s a locally based trust supporting the local area.

“The Hutt Mana Charitable Trust make it easy – you just download the application form it’s not complicated to fill in, you just need to have the right support material to attach to it,” says Mark.
